  1. Semaglutide (Wegovy, Ozempic)
    • GLP-1 receptor agonist
    • Administered as an injection weekly
    • Side effects include gastrointestinal symptoms, headache, dizziness, and fatigue
  2. Tirzepatide (Zepbound, Mounjaro)
    • It is both a GLP-1 and a GIP receptor agonist
    • Also administered as an injection weekly
    • Works by reducing appetite
  3. Liraglutide (Saxenda)
    • Daily injectable medication to reduce hunger signals
    • Side effects include nausea, diarrhea, increased lipase, and renal insufficiency
  4. Phentermine (Adipex, Suprenza)
    • Phentermine is the oldest and most widely used weight loss medication
    • Side effects include headache, high blood pressure, and insomnia, rapid or irregular heart rate, and tremor
  5. Phentermine-topiramate (Qsymia)
    • Topiramate can be combined with phentermine to decrease appetite and cravings. Having the combination of two drugs increases efficacy
    • Adults with migraines and obesity are good candidates for this weight-loss medication
    • Side effects include dizziness, altered taste, and insomnia
    • Contraindications include uncontrolled hypertension and coronary artery disease, hyperthyroidism, glaucoma, and sensitivity to stimulants
  6. Naltrexone-bupropion (Contrave)
    • Combines an opioid receptor antagonist with an antidepressant
    • Decrease cravings and appetite
    • Side effects include nausea, constipation, and headache
    • This medication should not be prescribed to a patient who has a seizure disorder or who takes opioids for chronic pain
  7. Setmelanotide (Imcivree)
    • For chronic weight management in specific rare genetic disorders
    • Requires confirmation through genetic testing
  8. Orlistat (Xenical and Alli)
    • Inhibits the absorption of dietary fats
    • Side effects include oily discharge and increased defecation
  9. Metformin
    • Treats type 2 diabetes, and PCOS.It also helps significantly for weight management, particularly in those with insulin resistance.
    • Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Usually taken orally with meals, dosage varies based on individual requirements and tolerance.
